MEET THE ROSE THAT’S A REAL KNOCKOUT

It’s the most widely sold rose in the USA. Introduced in 2000, the Knock Out® family of roses revolutionized our concept of the flower and is one of the more unique rose bush options for your Southwest Florida landscape. They’re easy to grow, require little maintenance and bloom nearly year-round in our climate — most prolifically in the summer months.

While Knock Out® rose breeder William Radler created the perfect symphony of prolific blooms and disease resistance, proper pruning is still required to get the best show. Like all roses, Knock Out® roses need to be planted where they will receive at least six to eight hours of full sun each day. It also helps to choose a site with good air movement and well-drained soil. The bush generally grows three- to five- feet tall and equally as wide, so be sure to space them appropriately.

These beauties are tolerant and self-cleaning.

After planting, water regularly. Then once established, sit back and enjoy the knockout colors! Just don’t expect a heavily fragrant bloom or long-lasting cut flowers. Still, with the vibrant variety of color choices, you can brighten any foundation or add a colorful hedge to your home garden with these drought-tolerant, self-cleaning beauties. They can even be grown as a topiary if you prune the trunk shoots occasionally.

Contrary to Gertrude Stein’s theory that “A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,” the Knock Out® is anything but. Give them a try!
