Nigrospora Stolon Rot caused by dry turf conditions prevents moisture absorption.
Nigrospora Stolon Rot really does a number on turf grass roots. It essentially starves them of moisture and nutrients, so that when it finally does rain, the roots can’t drink up because they’re all rotted.
This disease slowly tightens the stolons like a snug girdle, causing them to desiccate and die. If you’re a grass blade, that’s sure a rough way to go. Make sure you’ve identified this condition correctly as symptoms are similar to those caused by chinch bugs.
Nigrospora Stolon Rot creeps up on you.
“How did this happen?” That’s what one homeowner asked us, gazing at his thin, yellowing grass. Well, Nigrospora Stolon Rot is more dominant during dry spring and summer seasons, plus drought conditions with high temperatures favor its development. And that’s exactly what prevailed in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties this year. Our high temperatures this year made it a perfect storm, and when rains came, affected turf roots couldn’t soak up the moisture. No wonder this homeowner walked out and “suddenly saw” suffering turf areas.
Symptoms and solutions.
Suspect you might have Nigrospora Stolon Rot going on? Look for dark brown or reddish lesions on the stolons (the horizontal stems/runners that take root) and/or new grass growth that turns thin and yellows, eventually dying. Watering your grass adequately during the summer can help ward off this disease, though it’s not a guarantee. For control measures, ask your local garden center or landscape maintenance provider about applying a quality commercial fungicide.
