Cocoplum shrubs add mojo to Sarasota landscapes.
Cocoplum shrubs have a special charm for the way they can morph right in to your personal tastes. You can either shear them nice and tight for a more formal feel or let their branches flounce out in casual beachy style. Either way, if you let them grow tall enough, you’ll be treated to a unique privacy screen that you and your neighbors will both admire. They’re exceptionally hardy, too!
Cocoplum shrubs’ density and color are their secret power.
The cocoplum’s dense form (all the way to the ground) is what makes this versatile plant such a great choice. While you can grow it to an impressive 15 feet, you’ll see it more often at four to six. And the pièce de résistance? Shiny, red-tipped leaves on new growth that range from pale pink to deep burgundy or bronze. Cocoplums produce small white flowers that transform into – what else – small plums that can be made into jelly. Heads up: The flavor is rather bland so pair with a sweet bread.
Caring for your cocoplum shrubs and where to plant.
Moderately salt tolerant, these evergreens need the warmth of SW Florida with full to part sun to make their most colorful impact. They’ll grow in part shade, though. Let them dry out between regular waterings. Use hedge trimmers for a manicured appearance or branch-trim for a more natural look. Plant your cocoplums around tall palms, along a walkway, around your patio or as a lush hedge. Ideal used as a camouflage for your pool/AC equipment or as a backdrop for smaller plants.
