Draecena Tricolor shrubs spike up Sarasota landscapes with flair.

Ornamental in every way: Draecena Tricolor shrubs with sleek cane trunks burst with color.

Draecena Tricolor shrubs, a cultivated variety of Draecena Marginata, are shrubs you can’t shrug off. Their slender shape and showy foliage make them a perfect choice for narrow spaces. Unlike other dracaenas, their narrow-pointed leaves make a triple impact with colors of green, pink and cream — a gorgeous dracaena that’s a dream of a choice for your tropical garden.

Draecena Tricolor shrubs: Choose your spot.

First things first. Draecena Tricolor shrubs like bright, indirect sunlight (although they’ll perform well in shade). Too much sun will scorch their leaves, causing them to drop. They thrive in well-drained soil and get cranky when water pools around their roots. Once established, it’s best that you keep them moist, although they’ll tolerate short periods of drought. Fertilize with a slow-release product once a year for healthy growth.

Next, select your location. How about that narrow entryway area you have? Or the beds that rim your lanai? We’ve seen these draecenas used with darker foliage to frame a gazebo for stunning contrast. They’ll grow up to 15 feet with a spread of about three, so keep that in mind. They’re also wonderful used as architectural accents against blank walls.

Propagating your Draecena Tricolor shrubs.

If your older plant is getting too tall or leggy for your taste, cut the taller section(s) of cane and root in the ground (you can start them in a container as well). This allows the mid-area of the plant to retain a fuller look. A tip: Remove most of the leaves on the cuttings to help them get started and be sure to keep them moist. Other than that, just stay out of the way. One morning you’ll wake up and think you have a whole new shrub – it will look that good.

Low on maintenance, high on beauty.

These hardy evergreens are one of the easiest to maintain in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties. Just prune as needed for size and shape. A thin layer of mulch will help reduce temperature fluctuations and keep the soil moist. While they’re resilient to pests and diseases, you’ll need to watch for spider mites (they might suck up leaf sap in dry conditions). Oh, did we mention they’re deer-resistant, too?
