Turf nutrients on the way: Three questions I get asked most often.

Shorter days, lower light intensity, soon-to-be cooler temps – ArtisTree is already preparing for Florida’s winter season. But for our turf grass – some 5,000 acres representing thousands of managed residential properties throughout Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties — October couldn’t get here fast enough. Record-breaking summer temperatures topped off by heavy rains, Hurricane Helene and now Hurricane Milton have made this a turf-centric year.
But back to October. The summer fertilizer ban has been lifted, which means more nutrients are on their way. If you live in an ArtisTree-maintained community, you can count on us for code-compliant applications. If not, I’m sharing answers to three questions I get asked most often. Hope you find them helpful.
Why fertilize?
Just as your turf needs watering, it also needs essential nutrients to stay healthy. Fertilizer is just one source of those nutrients. Others come from rain, soil mineralization, organic residues and reclaimed water, all good knowledge to have if you maintain your own property. When you have a healthy lawn, you’re helping to control unwanted weeds, soil erosion and stormwater runoff.
What kind of fertilizer should be used?
It’s critical to maintain the optimum balance of fertilizer to maximize your landscape’s appearance while minimizing the impact on the surrounding environment. In ArtisTree’s case, we choose to use only granular fertilizers which contain a minimum of 50% slow-release nitrogen. Why? They have long-term feeding properties versus liquid-based products that leach quickly and allow signs of a “roller-coaster” effect in the turf’s color between applications. ArtisTree works closely with University of Florida and within local Extension Agency guidelines.
So I can count on fertilizer to make my lawn look great?
No. Fertilizer and turf nutrients from other essential sources are just one component of having a beautiful yard. Proper irrigation and mowing at the right height also contribute to the consistent health of your turf. (Mowing too short just stresses your grass and invites pests and diseases.) It’s always best to take a holistic approach to lawn care.
And that’s my take on October turf care for the SW Florida area. Enjoy the month and stay tuned for more future tips to keep you growing! — Carl Sikkema
