Carambola Starfruit: Think outside your HOA plant list & enjoy this summer.

Carambola starfruit
Carambola trees can grow up to 30 feet if not pruned and have a wide, bushy canopy.

Carambola starfruit trees, as well as other fruit trees, are generally banned by homeowner associations due to issues like fruit drop and pest attractants. But that doesn’t mean you can’t give their fruit a try, as in buying a few from your local grocery store and baking a Starfruit Upside Down Cake. ArtisTree Landscape found a starworthy Food Network recipe that’s definitely worth a try, especially since Carambola’s harvest season is well underway (June through February).

Let us be the first to say that while Betty Crocker may have delicious pineapple, strawberry and blueberry cake mixes, she sure doesn’t have Carambola starfruit.

So, we selected her pineapple flavor and substituted starfruit. And we opted to make easy cupcakes instead. They were SO good — sweet, moist and tasty. And something finally different for a change!

In fact, we’re going to bake more Starfruit Upside Down Cupcakes for our July 4th picnic. Maybe you should, too.

Preparing sliced fruit for easy-bake Starfruit Upside Down Cupcakes. We bought our starfruit from Publix.
Wish you could smell! These warm, mouthwatering starfruit cupcakes are ready to serve. Prefer fruit salads? Try this Honey Dew & Starfruit recipe from Publix.

Oh, to learn more about Carambola trees, here’s the story behind those yellow, waxy-looking fruits you see in the produce section of your local grocery store.
