Philodendron Xanadu stays fit and trim, no trimming required.

Philondendron
Florida paradise at its best: Philodendrum Xanadu encircles a palm while serving as a lush green backdrop to other tropical plantings.

Philodendron Xanadu is really hard to mess up, but some homeowners do despite their good intentions. Just as their Xanadu is getting full and lush, they decide to thin them out or cut them back, which defeats the whole purpose of even buying them.

That’s because Xanadu is a compact form of Philodendrum, which means it stays within a general size of two to four feet high and four to six feet wide. Basically, this perennial shrub is a perfectly sized clumping pillow — smaller and tidier than its taller siblings Xanadu Selloum and Philodendrum Monstera.

So, pitch your pruners. Else you’re running the risk of having thin, sad-looking Xanadus that can no longer do for themselves. After all, you’ve robbed them of their nutrients and exposed their root system to sun, making their roots look like dark, coiled-up electrical wire. It’s not a pretty sight. Instead, just let your Xanadu do its tropical thing by allowing it to … um, grow.

Cutting back your Philodendron Xanadu is unnecessary and exposes roots to sunburn, making them look like black electrical cords.

Where to plant your Philodendron Xanadu.

Philodendron Xanadu is ideal used as a border, foundation or mass planting. Consider encircling your palms or trees with them. Install in rows in front of a tall hedge. Place as striking accents for your plant beds. Or liven up your shaded patio area by planting them in containers. In all instances, be sure to come away from the house at least 2.5 feet as they need room to fill out. This fast grower pairs well with numerous, more colorful plants such as crotons, cordylines, shrimp plants and White Bird of Paradise.

Caring for your Xanadu.

Philodendron Xanadu performs best in part-sun/part shade, ideally in areas with dappled morning sun and afternoon shade. Be sure to let them dry out between regular waterings. Air circulation is also important to prevent them from remaining too moist. Xanandus tolerate alkaline soil but you’ll want to fertilize three times a year with a quality granular product.

Best of all, you don’t have to trim! What else could you want? If this neat, tight-growing foliage plant sounds like the perfect low-maintenance choice for your home, contact ArtisTree and let’s get your dream landscape off the ground.
