Arikury palms admired by palm connoisseurs for their spike-like spiral trunks.

Arikury palms aren’t that well-known, so chances are you’ll ask “What’s that?” when you see one. Their punky, spike-like leaf bases or “boots” are purposely left long to form a distinctive spiral pattern. Then they’re topped with dark-green pinnate fronds that almost appear too lengthy. Some people mistake them for young Queen palms, but if you’re a palm connoisseur, you know better. This short palm is long on looks with hardly any maintenance required.
Arikury palms ideal for small spaces.
Not only do Arikury accent palms have a ton of personality going for them, but they can also be tucked in small spaces. They only grow up to 10 feet or so and are framed with fronds about half that length, roughly four to six feet. That’s pretty long for a 10-foot-tall palm, but it’s what creates their signature look. Because their fronds have a spread of just three feet, they make ideal stand-alone specimens. Or, you can strategically place in small groupings. Palm afficionados with tropical courtyard gardens are known to incorporate an Arikury or two for added twist and textural interest. Multiple Arikury palms also make an excellent choice for lining walkways in small yards, too. In fact, your options abound — by an entry, in patio containers, or as understory palms under taller trees.
Planting and care requirements
You can plant your Arikury palms in sun or shade but they look more appealing in partial shade. Be sure to keep out of wet areas, and during warm dry periods, give them regular watering. These slow growers rarely require frond trimming, but once a dying frond turns almost all brown, you can remove it. Just remember to leave three inches of the leaf base to keep their wonderful spiky look! Low maintenance requirements make Arikury palms a great choice for Florida snowbirds.
Planning a landscape renovation or starting from scratch with a new builder? Consider including a distinctive palm that many in your neighborhood probably won’t have. Arikury palms are refreshingly different with an attitude all their own. And that’s just precisely why you might like them.
